“It was almost the third year after the year 1000 when in Italy and Gaul there was a renewal of the basilica churches; each people of Christianity vied with the others to have the finest.” In Bergamo as well, Romanesque architecture, whilst meeting a unitary need for spiritual and social renewal, finds its local variant. Two itineraries are recommended to see its extraordinary examples, an admirable synthesis of medieval mysticism and ferment.
